Metamorphosis: Programmed to Change

Infographic detailing the radical transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly during metamorphosis. The subject is common to most, yet scientists are only now beginning to understand what goes on inside a chrysalis. National Geographic Magazine December 2018.

Below shows the progression of the graphic from the original pitch, to sketch, to finalizing the design and illustration. The final illustrations were rendered with graphite, watercolor and digital coloration.

For this project, I also collaborated with the Butterfly Pavilion at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in order to get a closer look at blue morphos!
